CAD manageable because of huge capital inflows: economists

ndia's current account deficit, which represents net outflow of income from the country barring capital movement, surged to $13.7 billion in April-June this fiscal, but is manageable as the country is receiving huge capital inflows, say economists.

Current account deficit (CAD) trebled to $13.7 billion in April-June over the same period last year, due to larger imports after economic recovery and higher payments abroad for certain services.

"Although CAD is high, but we do not see any financing problem. Capital inflows will bridge the high CAD and throughout the year capital flows is expected to remain healthy," Yes Bank chief economist Shubhada Rao said.

Despite eurozone crisis, which moderated inflows by foreign institutional investors, capital inflows remained robust due to higher external commercial borrowings by India Inc and external assistance in the first quarter of 2010-11.

India received $17.5 billion of foreign capital on net basis in April-June against $4.6 billion in the year- ago period.

With the country receiving more capital inflows than its deficit on current account, there was net accretion of $3.7 billion to foreign exchange reserves of the country.

"If FII flow dampens suddenly, then financing the high CAD could be a concern. But I do not see such a situation arising in the context of likely further easing in the US and continued growth story in India," Rao said.

Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council Chairman C Rangarajan discounted fears on the widening current account deficit saying it will not be a problem to finance the deficit this fiscal due to the high capital inflows.

Crisil chief economist D K Joshi said, "Right now we have good capital inflows. Although a high CAD makes an economy vulnerable, but right now there is no peroblem."

Though first quarter CAD constituted 3.7 per cent of GDP, Joshi pegged it at 3 per cent for the entire 2010-11.

However, financial services firm Nomura India projected CAD to increase to 3.7 per cent of GDP this fiscal against 2.9 per cent last fiscal.

"We expect the CAD to worsen in the third quarter, but high net capital inflows should boost the Balance of Payments surplus. Overall, we expect a CAD of 3.7 per cent of GDP in FY11," Sonal Varma, economist with Nomura, said.

Barclays Capital Research also expected CAD to increase to 3.6 per cent of GDP this fiscal on strong domestic demand and rising commodity prices.

"Given the strong growth momentum in India and the weaker export prints in recent months, the current account deficit is likely to widen further in the coming quarters."

Computer-aided design (CAD) is now being used to create a host of products, from snazzy guitars to cool cars. The $367-million US-based SolidWorks creates software products for designers and design hot spots, part of the monolithic €1,335-million Dassault Systemes. Ray, who took over the reins three years back, speaks about design simplicity and sustainability.

“At SolidWorks, we are simplifying three-dimensional CAD from cost and ease-of-use perspectives. As we expand offerings to our customer's (read product engineers) adjacent needs like data management and simulation, we've remained true to this philosophy. You don't have to be an engineer or have a PhD to complete complex vibration and flow testing,” says Jeff.

For one, SolidWorks is extending online its product data management solutions, which will help individual users or smaller firms share and collaborate on designs. “Our technologies now allow a digital experience before you do it physically. A website that offers lighting solutions can allow you to download a particular lamp, and you can combine that with a picture that you have taken of your room and then see how the room lights up with that lamp,” he explains.

Bang in the middle of the recession last year, SolidWorks launched SolidWorks Sustainability, a tool that helps to modify a product with selected materials to lessen adverse ecological impact. “It measures the environmental impact over the life-cycle of your product in terms of four factors: carbon footprint, air acidification, water eutrophication (rise in chemical nutrients in an ecosystem), and total energy consumed,” Jeff explains.

He says product engineers need to be environmentally conscious about design. That implies that product engineers have to look at a large database of materials, be cognisant of where the materials are mined and consumed, — which, in turn, determines transport cost. So, you not only have a massive amount of data to analyse, but also a massive amount of iterative steps to test your theory.

What the new solution can do is to take individual part models and automatically show how the ‘like' material compares with the original material you chose on environmental impact. “This helps you to hone in on the perfect material more efficiently. In European Union, where environmental regulations are very strict, TVs are being designed to be broken up easily so that most parts can be reused and very little goes to a landfill. Products like Sustainability can help designers of such products,” he says.

The inevitable question about India's contribution crops up. “India's growth potential is important to SolidWorks. Much of the Indian market has begun adopting 3D CAD tools to compete in time-to-market, quality, and innovation. And we want to make sure that our solutions are the software of choice. The corporatisation of the realty sector has come as a windfall for young architectural grads who are reaping the dividends of an unprecedented demand from the industry. Freshers today are commanding salaries at least 3-4 times of their predecessors while hiring volumes too, have gone up manifold . In fact, so great is the demand that even expats are being wooed by the top guns of the industry.

DLF, Unitech, Housing Development &Infrastructure (HDIL) and many other leading players have increased their team of architects by 4-5 times over the last couple of years, industry observers said. Even the IT sector is knocking on the doors of young professionals for CAD and architectural design outsourcing projects.

“The way the realty sector is becoming corporatised has changed the dynamics of the business, which was earlier much smaller. Architects now play a critical role in areas such as evaluation of new projects, developing prototypes or liaisoning with national or overseas architect firms,” HDIL director Ashok Kumar Gupta told ET.

“Today realtors consult professional architects for all their projects which has created huge scope in this profession,” said Kolkatabased architect J P Agrawal.

Architecture has become a much sought-after discipline during placements in engineering /architectural schools. IIT Kharagpur (IIT-Kgp ), for instance , has seen the likes of Jones Lang LaSalle, Knight Frank, Unitech and L&T turning up for this year’s recruitments.

“We have seen salaries offered in the range of Rs 3.5 lakh to 6.5 lakh. There is no dearth of opportunities with more and more new companies coming into the sector and great expansion plans of existing giants,” says IIT-Kgp’s vicepresident (technology students gymkhana) Kunal Kashyap.

Outsourced design is gaining momentum: The overall worldwide slowdown in the aerospace, automotive and industrial machinery sectors is resulting in margins getting squeezed leaving Fortune 500 companies with no other option but to explore lower cost geographies. Outsourced engineering design is gaining momentum with companies beginning to outsource their design tasks to accelerate time to market as well as leverage lower cost geographies.

What has been outsourced to India in the past in the engineering field is mainly high volume, low value work like scanning drawings and converting them into digital format, markup of old drawings and migration of CAD data from one system to another. This kind of service fetches around US$ 10 to 15 per man-hour.

However, in recent times, with data connectivity between India and rest of the world improving vastly and western companies facing tremendous cost and time-to-market pressures, higher end engineering services work is coming to India. Geometric forms global CAD/CAM pact with EDS

MUMBAI: THE Mumbai-based CAD/ CAM software services company Geometric has formed a global alliance with EDS, the second largest software services firm in the world.

The alliance will enable Geometric to bid for all CAD/CAM related projects that EDS undertakes and bring them off-shore to its Indian development centre.

According to Manu Parpia, managing director, Geometric Software, ”Out relationship with EDS was restricted to working on their software products.

Now, we will be able to channelise our off-shore development services to any part of EDS.” Geometric already has a joint venture with Dassault, one of the biggest competitor of EDS in the CAD/CAM product space. It also has a global agreement with IBM for offering its CAD/CAM development services.

Geometric’s unconsolidated results for the quarter ending December 31, ‘02 have not been very good. The company reported a 17% decline in net profit at Rs 2.9 crore, from Rs 3.5 crore in the year-ago quarter.

Total income increased 3.6% to Rs 16.3 crore from Rs 15.7 crore. These results do not include the figures from the subsidiary and the joint venture company.

According to Mr Parpia, the drop in net profit is due to a large one-time product sale in the comparable quarter last year. Geometric is also considering an entry into the engineering services space.

According to Mr Parpia, “We have been working on the programming aspect by developing products for CAD/CAM product vendors. Through this offering, we are getting closer to the end-user of these tools, namely automobile or consumer electronic companies.”

Automation and CAD/CAM Adoption in Designing by Knitwear Industry of Ludhiana

The present investigation was conducted on automation and CAD/CAM adoption in designing by knitwear industry of Ludhiana. Data were collected from 110 knitwear units of Ludhiana consisting 56 small, 29 medium and 25 large scale knitwear units by using interview schedule. The sample was selected according to the probability proportional to size by following stratified sampling technique. The results revealed that for fabric designing, automatic machines, computer aided designing systems and manual sketching were used whereas in garment designing, manual sketching and CAD system were used. For the designing of knitwears, various softwares like Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Fukuhara, Universal, Stoll, Gerber, Autocad and Shima Seiki were used. Rapid generation of new styles, value addition, cost reduction, fast modification of design etc. were the main reasons given for using automation and CAD/CAM systems in knitwear designing.

Knitting is the second most frequently used method of fabric construction. The popularity of knitting has grown tremendously in the recent years because of the increased versatility of techniques, the adaptability of many new man-made fibers and the growth in the consumer demand for wrinkle resistant, stretchable, snug fitted garments, particularly in greatly expanding areas of sports wear and other casual wear-segments (Vadhani 2001).

There have been many changes in the knitwear industry during the last few decades. Previously, knitwears used to be processed manually but now-a-days, different technologies are available for producing good quality products in less time to compete internationally. Technological advancements have brought automation and Computer Aided Designing/Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems in all the areas of manufacturing including textile and garment industry. CAD is industry specific design system using computer as a tool. CAD is used to design anything from an aircraft to knitwear. Originally, it was used to design high precision machinery but in the 1970s, it made an entry into textile and apparel industry. Magnetic Clutch Delivers Smooth Torque Control

llied Automation, an innovative company from Ireland, has developed a new lipstick production machine. The formulations and production processes used in the manufacture of lipsticks play a key role in the strength of the final product. The new lipstick production line can produce up to 3,600 units per hour.

The critical part of this manufacturing process is the high-speed tube wind up. To accomplish this the base lipstick (in the primary tube) is held in place. A secondary tube, with an internal auger, sits on top of this tube of lipstick. A set of three jaws then clamp the base tubes and wind the auger into the lipstick. This winding process turns at approximately 200 rpm. The Ogura PHT 1.2D is set to approximately 1 lb inch of torque. As the base with the auger is wound into the lipstick, it bottoms out. At that point the Ogura PHT permanent magnet clutch slips and goes into its torque limiting mode. Too much torque and the lipstick auger would be stripped inside the lipstick. Too little torque and the lipstick would not sit all the way in the tube.

Since the Ogura PHT clutches transmits this slip torque magnetically, instead of via friction, high-volume accuracy is achieved tube after tube.

In the final process the tubes are picked up three at a time and go into an indexing table which rounds off the end of each lipstick.

Allied Automation has chosen the Ogura PHT 1.2D unit to guarantee a consistent and reproducible slip during the wind-up process. This is because the PHT clutch/brakes operate on a Hysteresis (magnetic) principle. This allows torque to be transmitted without frictional contact so the units are virtually wear free. No external electrical connection is required; therefore, units function independently from power fluctuation. Another major benefit is that each unit can be adjusted within its given torque range allowing users to fine-tune the torque to meet their requirements.

Since there is no frictional contact, no wear particles are produced, keeping the machine, lipstick, and more importantly, lips everywhere looking pure.

The Cost of CAD Software Today

You won't find many bargains right now, but you will find some vendors that are being flexible regarding lapsed maintenance contracts.

How is the down economy affecting the price of CAD software and maintenance? In particular, will companies that let software subscriptions lapse as a result of reduced headcounts or budget cuts face high costs when they begin to reinstate those maintenance agreements downstream? Are CAD software vendors willing to bend rules regarding subscription contracts in the interest of these customers?

In August, Cadalyst called on CAD software developers to answer these questions. We contacted the larger CAD developers directly and posted an announcement on Cadalyst.com to invite all companies to submit information related to products that are primarily computer-aided design solutions.

Generally, vendors seem to be holding steady on pricing and the deals seem few and far between. This could signal that the companies are not in a position to make price cuts or that they don't want to risk devaluing their products -- or both. More importantly, we're happy to hear that some companies, such as Graphisoft, are working directly with customers who are finding it difficult to maintain current licensing agreements.

Malware authors targeting CAD users

Malware authors are crafty, they will attempt to infect anyone and anything, and nothing is sacred with them. That’s why the news of Malware targeting CAD (Computer-Aided Design) files isn’t too surprising.

According to information from August 7, and updated detection notes released by Trend Micro this morning, there were indeed Malware attacks on files used by one of the more-known CAD related programs, Autodesk’s AutoCAD.

The Malware, which is confirmed for Windows XP, NT, and Server 2003, has been around since 2005 or so. It works exactly like the Malware that attacks the various files used in the Microsoft Office suite, and can come as a payload from any malicious source.

Once the system is infected, a malicious AutoCAD macro (acad.vlx ) is loaded as the payload. The Macro will replicate across various AutoCAD files and directories, while at the same time loading a registry file that disables firewall settings and using the NET USER command to create an administrator account. The newly created administrator account will use the NET SHARE account to share drives on the system (C to I), leading to more infection points across a network.

Service Provider needs to provide design and drawings mainly in 2 areas i.e. Architectural Drawings and Designs for Internal Furniture and Fixtures.
The Architectural Drawings will be required in a Portable Document Format (PDF) and will include but are not limited to:
a) Two Dimensional (2D) Location Floor Plans (Floor Plans). The Floor Plans will detail the internal furniture, office equipment, data points, phone points, fire extinguishers and security containers.
b) Blocking and Stacking Plans, detailing the various areas (m²) of office space, circulation space, utility area, etc by Floor, Group and Division;
c) Security access diagrams and door key scheduling;
d) Other such plans as may be required, such as asset registers, printer location floor plans and emergency phone and exit plans.
Designs for Internal Furniture and Fixtures include
a) Redesign of the internal fitout (with several different options for consideration) to facilitate various accommodations restructures, churn works and other fitout modifications.
b) Revision or Modification of previously supplied fitout redesign options.
c) Capacity to respond at short notice or urgent requirements of fitout design requests.
d) Design requests will be in the 2D and 3D formats.
Service provider needs to outline its proposed method for the exchange of updated data.
Service provider will be required to input collected data into the digital model for updating.
Service provider will be required to complete site visits and walk throughs on a regular basis as agreed with the Contract Manager to review floor layouts for any alterations.

3D CAD: Integration of Reverse Engineering

Both reverse engineering and three-dimensional CAD are established techniques, but using the two together has not always been as easy as it could be. Jon Severn reports on a development that combines solid, surface and triangle modeling to enable reverse engineering and CAD to be more closely integrated.

Not all new designs start with a 'clean sheet of paper' or, more likely today, a blank computer screen. New products are often adapted from existing ones for which no CAD data is available, and the creation of such data would be time-consuming and costly. Reverse engineering the existing product by using a three-dimensional scanner and appropriate software can be very cost-effective in such situations, though the resultant data is not necessarily as easy to use as a starting point for the new design as might be expected.

Another way in which scanned data plays a crucial role in the creation of new products is in the medical and dental fields. Yet again, however, the designer faces the problem of migrating the data from the reverse engineering software package to the design environment. The root of the problem in many cases is that scanners output data as triangle files whereas CAD systems use solid modelling, surface modelling or a hybrid combination of solids and surfaces.

Tom Shelley reports on a Russian authored 3D CAD package being aimed at European marketsKompass 3D is a full 3D parametric CAD package, which is very robust; at least we were totally unable to crash it. And is also very competitively priced.

Produced by Ascon in St Petersburg, the current release offered in the UK is V9, although we have had the chance to experiment with an evaluation copy of V10.
It includes built in tutorials, and our only criticism is that these seem to have been written for V9. Some of the toolbar structure has been changed in V10 so it is sometimes necessary to hunt around and find the right toolbars for tasks using the 'view' command.

Support in the UK is provided by Sprut Technology, which is based in Dawlish, Devon. Dave Pearson, managing director of Sprut says: "We mainly support it online, using Net Viewer, which can be downloaded for free."

New Kids on the Block Make Easy To Use Cad

Tom Shelley reports on a new 3D CAD packageThe latest 3D CAD package to come to our attention is SpaceClaim, which announced its first product in 2008. It aims to bring CAD to the masses and make easy and straightforward packages for use by engineers that tend not to get involved with 3D modelling.

It turns out the company has come out of the same stable that produced PTC and SolidWorks. And apart from the fact that it is based on the ACIS kernel, SpaceClaim's vice president of Research and Development Danny Dean wrote the original prototype of Pro/Engineer. The CEO is also a former CEO of Mathsoft and to add to this already slightly incestuous relationship with other CAD and CAE companies, it is currently headquartered in 150 Baker Avenue Extension in Concord, Massachusetts, which used to house SolidWorks until they found larger premises on the other side of the street.

Chris Randles, president and CEO of SpaceClaim says: "Our mission is to bring 3D CAD to a different class of user. Particularly the large number of engineers who are either still stuck in 2D, or don't use CAD at all. There are between 15 and 25 million engineers engaged in manufacturing across the world. Yet there are still less than 1million 3D CAD seats, and around 3million 2D seats."

Working in 2D is still a big drawback if the model is to be subjected to finite element or computational fluid dynamics analysis, since these require an initial model in 3D. Everyone agrees that analysis should be undertaken as early as possible in the design process, to reduce the length of iteration loops. John Swanson, the founder of ANSYS, has even gone on record as saying that it should be simulation should actually precede detailed CAD rather than vice versa.

However, while most 3D CAD vendors claim to be user friendly, we find them still to be rather hard to learn. And those that started out simple and straight forward to use, seem to have become more and more complicated.

"SpaceClaim tries to be easier," says Randles. "It is based on direct modelling rather than parametric modelling except this enables you to do almost everything that a parametric CAD package normally does, but without a feature tree. You can either create a model from scratch or import one.
"It will read any file and allow you to manipulate it, using an XML format."

Autodesk Inventor 2010 offers a greatly improved user interface, a quick way of building up mechanisms, and user assisted optimisation tools.

AutoCAD 2010 has also been given some of the facilities developed for Inventor. The company increasingly recognises the fact that millions of users are still wedded to AutoCAD, as opposed to the 900,000 who have embraced 3D modelling with Inventor.

As well as being quite hard to learn, "the reason that the transition is so slow is because 3D design is still quite labour intensive," says Autodesk technical engineer Steve Bedder.

The first thing you might notice with Inventor 2010, is the, 'Progressive Tool Tips'. If the cursor is made to hover over an icon, it not only identifies itself, but if it continues to hover, a pane comes up with words and a diagram to show how to use it. Hitting F1 will then bring up the appropriate help file.

Closer integration of reverse engineering and CAD techniques

Both reverse engineering and three-dimensional CAD are established techniques, but using the two together has not always been as easy as it could be. Jon Severn reports on a development that combines solid, surface and triangle modelling to enable reverse engineering and CAD to be more closely integrated.

Not all new designs start with a 'clean sheet of paper' or, more likely today, a blank computer screen. New products are often adapted from existing ones for which no CAD data is available, and the creation of such data would be time-consuming and costly. Reverse engineering the existing product by using a three-dimensional scanner and appropriate software can be very cost-effective in such situations, though the resultant data is not necessarily as easy to use as a starting point for the new design as might be expected.

Another way in which scanned data plays a crucial role in the creation of new products is in the medical and dental fields. Yet again, however, the designer faces the problem of migrating the data from the reverse engineering software package to the design environment. The root of the problem in many cases is that scanners output data as triangle files whereas CAD systems use solid modelling, surface modelling or a hybrid combination of solids and surfaces.

Delcam says it is addressing this issue in a new version of its Copycad reverse engineering package. Copycad Pro is claimed to be the first product development system to offer what Delcam has called Tribrid Modelling, which adds triangle modelling to a hybrid surface/solid modeller. The Tribrid version of Copycad is said to improve the efficiency with which companies can re-engineer existing products to create improved or bespoke designs.

In some ways, it's the CAD industry's version of those age-old debates, like the one over Coke vs. Pepsi, or republican vs. democrat. As the discourse heats up over the merits of traditional parametric, or history-based modeling tools compared with a new breed of direct modelers, the only clear winner may be engineers, many of whom were previously shut out from using CAD and who are now increasingly being presented with a range of powerful and flexible options.

Led by the introduction of PTC Pro/ENGINEER more than 20 years ago, parametric or history-based modeling has dominated the CAD scene with a handful of direct or explicit modelers hanging out there on the fringes. Parametric modeling leverages a history tree to bring control and intelligence to the process of building CAD models. The approach gained traction over the flexible, but functionally-limited, direct modeling paradigm over the years because it was viewed as a more powerful and automated way to create complex models, especially for large assemblies that use families of parts.

Yet in the last several years, parametric CAD modelers lost some of their luster. Users have run into roadblocks due to the complexity of the history tree and they often complain about the inflexibility of the tools for doing conceptual work and last-minute design changes. Their concerns rekindled the decades-old argument, which has come back with a vengeance this last year as newcomers like SpaceClaim rolled out new direct modelers that address many of the shortcomings of the original class of tools. Following suit, history-based CAD leaders like PTC, Siemens PLM Software and Autodesk have come to market with their own variations on the technology, including a new hybrid breed that claims to marry the benefits of both approaches.

Auto suppliers suffer heavy burden of industry's multiple CAD systems

The multi-CAD environment of the automakers especially affects the survival of its suppliers. The tier-1 and tier-2 supplier base, for example, has to service everybody with design data; and they're getting slaughtered in the process.

That means having to deal with translating 3D data from all around the globe in the various computer-design systems like Catia, UG, Pro-E and others. That is a cost and time burden these suppliers can no longer afford.
Then the matter gets worse as automakers demand all supplier-designed data be returned as native to their (automaker's) own design software. That’s another burden on suppliers already attempting to cut costs just to remain competitive.

Until a single CAD system does arrive for the auto industry, suppliers who have to work in this multi-CAD environment now have an interesting, intermediate option; a literal ace in their pocket besides the usual translators like IGES and STEP. Laser Scanning Improves Face Shield Design

The need for safety, security, and the protection of people working in facilities around the world is increasing every day.

3M’s Occupational Health and Environmental Safety (OH&ES) division was tasked with developing a new face shield for welders.

About half-way through the design and prototyping phase, 3M realized they needed to improve the aesthetics of the design and needed new CAD data to revise the model.

The traditional design trial-and-error method of altering the CAD model was too time- consuming and expensive for the project’s targeted release and budget.

“We decided to take an approach like the automotive industry does and make a clay model of the shield to address aesthetic concerns,” says a Product Development Specialist at 3M. A clay model would increase the speed and accuracy with which changes could be implemented in the shield to bring the project back in line with the design intent.

The Solution

3M sent a picture of the clay welding shield mock-up to laser scanning service bureau, GKS Inspection Services.

The idea was to scan the left half of the model, and from that, use the point cloud to guide the creation of the new surfaces in CAD and mirror them to the other side, thus saving scan time and insuring a balanced design.

Also, the 3M CAD engineer needed 3D curves created at some of the surface intersections and orientated to an origin at a specified location.

Laser scanning projects a line of laser light onto surfaces while cameras continuously triangulate the changing distance and profile of the laser line as it sweeps along, the problem of missing data on an irregularly shaped surface is eliminated.

The laser measures fine details and captures complex freeform geometry so that the object can be exactly replicated.

Talking with a school committee member tonight, I was reminded (quite rightfully), how important it is to consider the community in which we live as we design courses. She was very concerned that I had eliminated CAD from our course offerings in favor of programming and advanced web design courses, leaving a potentially valuable skill-based course for students who won’t be headed to college off the books.

Since we live in a town built around a manufacturing economy, it’s quite likely that a number of our graduates won’t head for college and instead need to be prepared to enter the workforce. While it might seem like this should be the job of a vocational/technical school, in fact our voc-tech programs are highly competitive, shutting out students who can still really benefit from whatever pre-employment 21st Century skills we can offer.

Yet if I simply offer CAD as we teach it now, I’m doing it at the expense of the programming courses another subset of our students desperately needs. I could reduce the number of sections and attempt to strike a balance, but the licensing for AutoCAD is fairly expensive. Is it worth the price at 20-30 students per year?

Ramix faced daily challenges designing impellers and moulds while their sister company, Romit was responsible for the machining. Because of shortcomings in their existing CAD and CAM systems, Ramix and Romit were forced to outsource a lot of work causing leaking profits. They needed a solution to keep the work in house that went beyond just putting their finger in the dam. They needed to fix the problem.

VX CAD/CAM and other major competitors were pitted against each other to see who could close the gap. In the end, the choice was clear. VX’s total integration excelled and could get the job done easily...and at a price that wouldn’t break the bank!

Romit Creates Profitable Niche

Romit had been trying to expand into the impeller market but it was a struggle; their old system simply couldn’t handle the complexity. “We were amazed at how the tools ramix1in VX worked,” explains Ramix-Romit director, Auke Sjoerd Tolsma. “Customers would send difficult 2D drawings and it was easy to quickly construct 3D parts and get them on the mill. This opened the door to modeling and machining impellers.” Romit often gets no more than a table of coordinates in radials for the complex 3D form of an impeller. They’ll use a spreadsheet to calculate the coordinates and import them into VX where the powerful wireframe and surface modeling tools take over. “It takes us more time to import and convert the data in our spreadsheet than it does to model an impeller,” Tolsma says.

Machining the impellers is done with VX CAM using up to 5 axis milling. “After the introduction of VX CAD/CAM, we have increased our machining hourly rate by more than 20%,” he says. Impeller manufacturing proves to be a specialty which notably increases Romit’s presence in today’s competitive market...and boosts that bottom line.
